St. Naum Monastery
Millennium Sanctuary and Peacock Estate on Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia
Discover the Peacock Sanctuary by Lake Ohrid
When you pass through the arched stone gate of St. Naum Monastery, the first thing that catches your eye is not the solemn church, but the blue-green peacocks strolling leisurely among the flowers. This is a place where religion, nature, and legend intertwine perfectly. Walking into the dimly lit red-brick church, you'll look up to see vibrant Byzantine frescoes that have witnessed centuries of prayer. Locals will tell you to press your ear to St. Naum's stone coffin — legend says you can still hear his heartbeat (actually the sound of underground springs). But the true magic lies outside the monastery. Rent a wooden rowboat to glide over the emerald-transparent Black Drin springs. As you watch pure bubbles rise from the underwater springs, you'll understand why this is one of the most miraculous places in the Balkans.

The History & Culture of St. Naum Monastery
Historical Significance
St. Naum Monastery was founded in 905 by St. Naum of Ohrid, a medieval scholar and missionary who, along with St. Clement, promoted Slavic language and Orthodoxy in the Ohrid region. It is one of the oldest and most important spiritual and cultural centers of Slavic Orthodoxy, and a hub for the early spread of the Cyrillic script. St. Naum was buried here in 910. Over the following centuries, the monastery was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The current main church was largely reconstructed in the 16th century (during the Ottoman era) on the original foundations.
Architectural Features
The main structure features classic Byzantine architecture with alternating red bricks and white stones. The interior boasts stunning, well-preserved frescoes from the 16th to 19th centuries, with rich colors and intricate details. The exterior is surrounded by lush gardens where dozens of vibrant blue-green peacocks roam freely. The multi-domed cruciform structure presents a fusion of early Byzantine style and medieval Macedonian local characteristics.
Cultural & Spiritual Value
This is a major pilgrimage site in North Macedonia and the Balkans. Legend has it that if you press your ear to St. Naum's stone coffin inside the church, you can still hear his heartbeat — actually the sound of underground springs, but it symbolizes the union of religious miracles and the power of nature. Due to its unique location and spring water resources, the monastery was also a center for physical and mental healing. Many with mental illnesses were brought here to seek the saint's protection and cure.

A half-day trip (4-5 hours) is recommended. Arrive by boat, explore the gardens and interact with peacocks, then visit the church and tomb. After lunch, rent a rowboat to explore the Black Drin springs, and finally relax on the nearby beach.
